Save money now, buy online

Traditionally, e-commerce in Rwanda is often associated with the fear of losing one’s money by paying online or lack of a credit card. However, in reality many Rwandans have either themselves or know a relative, friend or a workmate who has ordered for cars from Japan, Canada or Belgium paying fully in advance and awaiting safe delivery to either Dar es Salaam or Mombasa port and eventually driven to Kigali.

So online shopping is not as new and as scary as we might want to think. In fact many Rwandans order for goods online from Dubai, China etc. and comfortably pay for their goods in advance because they understand that the future of business in Africa will be on the internet.

Technology as we all know will disrupt all industries not only in Africa and in the world, and it’s only those who jump onto the bandwagon and adapt to change early that will benefit while those who delay and wait in fear will pay a heavy price.

Today, as much it is said that Africans do not like to read, the traditional media of newspapers, radios and television is being overtaken by the power of whatsapp, Facebook, twitter and instagram. It is normal practice to find many people in Kigali’s social places glued on to their phones reading or watching videos of events happening in Rwanda and across the world.

Statistics show that 10% of world trade in now conducted through e-commerce. Even though Africa’s experiences many more challenges to e-commerce like poor infrastructure and logistics systems, the same problems did not deter China from building a huge industry with the likes of Alibaba that many Africans depend on for their sourcing of goods from China.

Alibaba’s founder, Jack Ma believed that the lack of logistics, infrastructure and payment systems in Africa is actually an opportunity for e-commerce. “This is where I see Africa, full of problems, but full of opportunities,” he said while visiting Rwanda in 2017.
